Markham Waxers Game Report

AUG. 27/99 (Pre-season exhibition) P1 P2 P3 OT FINAL
MARKHAM WAXERS 3 4 2 - 9
BRAMPTON CAPITALS 0 1 0 - 1
The Markham Waxers hit the road for their second exhibition matchup of the year and left Brampton with a convincing 9-1 victory as the combination of veterans and newcomers to the 1999/2000 edition of the Waxers overwhelmed the young Brampton squad.

Joel Kitchen scored the first of his two goals just 63 seconds into the contest with Robbie Burrows drawing the assist. Four minutes later Chris Petracco converted from Kitchen to make it 2-0 Waxers. After dominating the opening half of the first period but then momentarily faltered a little to allow Brampton a several scoring opportunities but netminder B.J. Forsyth was up to the challenge. With a minute and a half remaining in the period Kitchen scored his second from Burrows and Petracco and the Waxers enjoyed a 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes.

Ryan Steane scored just 55 seconds into the second period with defenceman Jim Ulcar earning the helper. Midway through the period the Waxers struck twice, nine seconds apart to put this one out of reach at 6-0. Lawne Snyder unleashed a vicious slapshot for the first of the two (assists to Kevin Tompkins and Kitchen). Moments later Paul Robinson converted from David Colucci and Snyder. The clubs would exchange goals before the period would end with the Waxers leading 7-1. The seventh goal scored by Jesse Olden with James Regan drawing the assist.

The final frame saw the Waxers continue to move the puck well and received a significant boost to their attack as the defence corps, an especially solid crew this year showed that collectively they have wheels and can move the puck effectively. Several times the blueline led rushes in exciting fashion but controlled fashion, definitely the blueline will be important as the game is much quicker with the absence of the red line permitting quick breakout passes that will demand a mobile defense crew. Regan scored a shorthanded effort unassisted and three minutes later Ulcar and Jimmy Ball combined for the final goal of the night.

Certainly this year's club will be an exciting one for the many loyal fans of the Markham Waxers Junior A Hockey Club. There is a rock solid core of veteran players returning, all character guys who come to play every night. Add to that an exciting mix of new talent and the Waxers are a club that is very much going to contend in what should be an extremely competitive conference race this year with the re-alignment. Kudos, to the coaching staff of Russ Herrington and Jeff Laceby and especially to General Manager Larry Herrington for the tremendous recruiting job.
