The
Markham Waxers, trying to build off their momentum
from Friday night’s victory, gave a valiant effort in game 5 of their
semi-final series with Wexford however, could not muster enough and in the end
saw their season come to a close at the hands of the best team in the South. This
was the only game of the five that did not include an empty net goal,
however,
Markham
had to play catch up all night and just could not find a way to get the
equalizer in the final half of the 3rd period.
Markham
started off the first period quite well and by the end of 20 minutes held a
11-5 shot advantage yet trailed on the scoreboard 2-1. Wexford
opened the scoring

in to the contest before the Waxers tied it just

later. With Riley
Hill and Leiland
Gauley buzzing down low in the Wexford end, Nathan
Morris attacked the net from the point and slid home a centering pass for
his 1st of the playoffs. Wexford
would grab the 2-1 lead a few minutes later.
Markham
tied the game 2-2 in the second, with

left on the clock, as Josh Jacobs
centered the puck to David Lyall
and when his initial shot was stopped, Derrell
Levy was there to bang in his first of two on the evening. Wexford
would score two minutes later to take a 3-2 lead in to the third period.
The
Raiders upped the lead to 4-2 early in the third but the Waxers
responded again to make it 4-3 with

left to play. This time, Kyle
O’Boyle made a head man pass to Jacobs who fended off the Raiders defenceman
with one hand and sent a cross ice pass with the other to Levy streaking to the
net for a redirection goal, the final one of both the Waxers
season and of Levy’s fine Jr A career.
Markham
held a 29-20 shot advantage on the evening but it was not enough.
The Waxers poured their heart and soul in to
everything they did this season, and in the end, they have nothing to be
ashamed about and certainly made the organization proud of their efforts!
