A much better effort by the Waxers as they hosted
the Pickering Panthers who were looking for revenge after a loss on home ice to
Markham the week before. In the end, the game turned in to a goaltending dual
between two of the best 1988 born goalies in the province, with the Waxers' Trevor
O'Neill stopping 24 shots on his way to the thrilling 3-2 overtime victory.
Pickering opened the scoring late in the first
period to make it 1-0 after 20 minutes, a period in which the Waxers held the
upper hand on the shot clock, 10-8. Pickering would up their lead to 2-0
in the opening minutes of the second and it looked like the were heading in to
the second intermission with the 2-0 lead. The Waxers broke the goose egg
however before the end of the second, after being stoned cold on numerous
chances as they pepppered 15 shots at the Pickering net. Riley
Hill won a race to the puck in the Waxers end and threw the loose puck out
in to the neutral zone. Leiland
Gauley swooped in on the puck as it crossed the Pickering blue line,
stopped and fed a streaking James
Gaulrapp with a beautiful pass to spring a breakaway for Gaulrapp from the
blueline. James made no mistake, beating the goalie with a backhand deke
with 2:42 left on the clock.
The third period was more of the same as the
Waxers continued to press, looking for the equalizer, only to see chance after
chance be thwarted by the Panthers netminder. In the end, it was the Joel
Gaulrapp who was able to solve the stone wall as he fired a hard wrist
through a screen directly off a faceoff won by Brandon
Rubeo with 1:56 left in regulation to set up the first overtime of the
season.
In overtime, O'Neill kept the Panthers at bay,
stopping 3 shots in the process, which helped set up the OT heroics of Hill.
This time, in a bit of role reversal, Gauley was the one who won a race for a
loose puck right in front of the Waxers bench. He made a cross ice pass
to Hill who skated down his off wing lugging the puck. Just at the top of
the circles Hill saw an opening and fired a quick wrist shot around the
defenceman and it rang in off the crossbar before the goalie even moved.
