Another slow start and a 2-0 first period deficit
proved to be too much to overcome for the Waxers as they were beaten 3-2 by
visiting Thornhill in the Rogers OHA Primetime Season Premiere. Full credit to
Thornhill on the evening who had more jump and hunger than the Waxers who
really only came to life in the final 15 minutes of the hockey game.
The first period was all Thornhill as they were
able to score early (at the 1:17 mark) and late (at the 16:27 mark) to take a
2-0 lead to the dressing room after holding a 9-7 edge in shots on net.
The Waxers would cut in to the lead in the opening minutes of the second period
but could get no closer in the middle frame in which both teams fired 11 shots
on net. On the Waxers goal, after some of the only offensive pressure to
that point in the game, the puck came back to the point from B.J.
Quinto and on Nathan Morris' stick.
His quick shot towards the net was neatly redirected by David
Kostuch for his second of the season.
The third period opened the way the first did,
with Thornhill scoring just over a minute in to the period, to make the score
3-1. The Waxers would suddenly come to life with 15:33 left on the clock
when a Joel Gaulrapp goal,
assisted by Brandon Rubeo, gave
the Waxers some hope and cut the lead to 3-2. The Waxers applied more
pressure in the last 15 minutes but could not get the equalizer and in the end,
suffered their third home defeat in four tries .
