An
exciting game that was close for 40 minutes saw the Waxers
turn on the afterburners for the final 20 minutes, scoring 4 goals in the final
frame to go on to a 6-2 victory over the visiting North York Rangers. James
Gaulrapp led the way with 5 points on the night, followed by his brother
Joel Gaulrapp, who picked up 3 points of
his own as the Waxers earned their 20th
victory of the season.
North
York
opened the scoring on a deflection goal at the 12 minute mark before the Waxers
would even the score 1-1 by the end of the first.
Straight from the draw in the Rangers end, Riley
Hill won the draw to James Gaulrapp, and he blew to the net with the puck,
sliding it through the legs of the tender for his first of two powerplay
markers this evening. The teams
repeated the scoring order in the second, as the Waxers
tied the score with another powerplay goal minutes
after North York had taken a 2-1 lead. This
time, James was there to bang home a rebound after Brandon
Rubeo and Joel Gaulrapp had earlier attempts
stopped by the Rangers goaltender, sending the teams to the intermission tied
2-2.
The
Waxers scored the winning goal in the opening
minute of the third, banging home the puck just as
another powerplay expired. Nathan
Morris kept the play alive at the blueline and
fed the puck to James Gaulrapp in the slot. His
shot on net was stopped by Hill, who pulled it around the sprawling netminder
and slid it in to the wide open net. Shareef
Labreche gave the Waxers
some breathing room when he took an outlet pass in the neutral zone, on a play
started by Rubeo and David
Kostuch, and blew in to the Rangers end before
ripping a high wrist shot over the goalie’s glove for a 4-2 lead.
The Waxers finished the scoring with two
late goals from Joel Gaulrapp. The
first saw Yiorgo
Christodoulou spring James on a 1-on-1 rush and he delayed long enough to
allow Joel to catch up where he fed him a perfect pass for Joel to walk in a deke
the goalie. The second, to make
the final 6-2, saw Joel grab a rebound off a Morris point shot (set up by
James) and rip it in to the top of the net beore
the goalie could recover.
Goaltender
Jeff Fischer improved to 2-1 after
stopping 24 of the 26 shots he faced on the night, including all 7 in the final
period.
