The
Waxers traveled to Thornhill
for the first time this season looking to improve on the 1-1 season series
record versus the Thunderbirds. In
the end, a 3 goal outburst in the third period powered the Waxers
to a solid 7-3 victory and gave the Waxers their 18th
victory in their 25th game of the season.
The
Waxers jumped on the board first, at the
3:45
mark of the first, when Brett Molnar scored unassisted, directly from an
offensive zone faceoff.
Molnar won the draw clean, walked right to
the net and deked the goalie for the 1-0 lead.
Thornhill tied the score 1-1 before the end
of the period.
Markham
grabbed a two goal lead with two powerplay goals in
the first half of the second period to lead 3-1 midway through the game.
Brandon Rubeo scored the first, his 10th
of the year, with a bullet point shot after being set up by James and
Joel Gaulrapp.
Nathaniel Brooks scored
the first of two on the night, when he got to the rebound of a Nathan Morris
and snuck it in the net
before the goaltender could recover. Thornhill
made it 3-2 but the Waxers restored the two goal
lead when Joel Gaulrapp capitalized on a 3-2 rush, started with a Thornhill
turnover, by roofing the puck over the goalie’s glove hand (assisted by James
and Brooks). The Thunderbirds made
it close again by scoring in the final minute of the second period.
Markham
saved their best period for last, outscoring Thornhill
3-0 on the strength of two more powerplay goals and
one even strength goal. Brooks
gave the Waxers their two goal lead back by scoring
his second of the night, just

in to the third, with assists to the Gaulrapp brothers.
David Kostuch then banged home a rebound 4
minutes later after both Molnar and Josh Jacobs had earlier whacks at the puck
but were stopped by the Thornhill goalie.
Markham
finished the scoring when

Gaulrapp
cleaned up the garbage left over from a Nathaniel Brooks missed breakaway with

left on the clock. Goaltender
Trevor O’Neill stopped 26 shots, including all 5 he faced in the third, to
earn his 16th victory of the season.
