The return of Rob
Cundari to the Waxers net was a successful one as the Waxers earned a
nailbiting 4-2 victory over visiting Ajax, the first match up of the two teams
this year. Cundari had been on the injured list since leaving the North
York game after 40 minutes, back on October 1st. Stopping 21 shots on the
evening, Cundari earned his first regulation victory of the season.
After a scoreless first period, the Waxers found
themselves behind 1-0 after the Axemen opened the scoring with 6:52 left in the
second period. It took all of 35 seconds for the Waxers to tie the game
up 1-1 on the first of two goals by Joel
Gaulrapp. After buzzing around the Ajax end, James
Gaulrapp and Brandon Rubeo
each had chances to score but it was Joel who was able to find the back of the
net, chipping in a juicy rebound from a Rubeo shot. Less than four
minutes later, the Gaulrapp twins combined on a 4-on-4 situation, to give the
Waxers the lead after 40 minutes. James grabbed a pass from Nathan
Morris and found Joel behind the net. He stepped out from the side of
the net and roofed a shot over the shoulder of the Ajax goaltender for his 10th
goal of the season.
Ajax would tie the game at 3-3 early in the
third period before the Waxers took over for good. Swarming the net time
after time, the Waxers could not get the go ahead goal. Then, with a
faceoff in the Ajax end, Riley Hill
won the draw directly to Josh Jacobs
and after making a quick move on the boards, Jacobs slid out in front andd
buried a wrist shot home for the eventual game winning goal. Markham shut
down Ajax the rest of the way and iced the victory with a last minute, empty
net goal by Rubeo (with assists to the Gaulrapps). The Waxers out shot
the Axemen 42-23 on the way to their 9th straight victory of the season.
