Markham blew open a tight game with the visiting
Vaughan Vipers with 3 goals in the third period, two of them shorthanded, en
route to their 8th win of the season, 4-0 over the Vipers. For goaltender
Trevor O'Neill, it was his first
Jr A shut out as he stopped all 16 shots he faced over the 60 minutes.
For the Waxers, it was the first shut out of the year, and first since
September 2002.
Markham got on the board, with what turned out
to be all the offence required, at the 10:26 mark of the opening
period. Brett Molnar
intercepted a pass in the Vaughan end and drove the puck towards the net as David
Kostuch and Brandon Fackey
were heading in that direction. The rebound attempt by Kostuch was
stopped by Fackey was able to lift the puck up and over the goalie for his
first of two on the night.
The second period saw no scoring by either team
as both goalies had to make tough saves to keep the score unchanged after 40
minutes. Early in the third period, it was Fackey who gave the Waxers
some breathing room with a shorthanded goal 5:36 in to the period. After
a Vaughan dump in attempt struck the officials' skate and bounced out to open
ice, Fackey scooped up the puck and raced in on a breakaway. Fooling the
goaltender with a sweet backhand to forehand deke, Fackey slid the puck in to
the open net for his 3rd of the campaign. Then, seven minutes later, the
Gaulrapp twins teamed up in a 4-on-4 situation to up the Waxers lead to
3-0. In a similar goal to the Waxers' first on the night, Joel
Gaulrapp swooped in on the net and was able to knock the puck up and over
the sprawling goaltender who had just stuffed a James
Gaulrapp deke attempt in the crease. James would eventually get some
revenge as he scored the fourth goal, an incredibly patient goal with the
Waxers' shorthanded and 1:59 left on the clock. After Brandon
Rubeo cleared the puck out of the zone, he and Gaulrapp raced up the ice on
a 2-on-1. Gaulrapp froze the defenceman by applying the brakes and then
waited as practically the entire play went past him before stepping out in to
the slot and applying a smooth deke on the goalie for his 5th of the season.
