For
the first time this season the Waxers avoided overtime while at the same time
snapped their "point streak" at four straight games as they lost a
spirited and entertaining affair to Hamilton, 3-2. The game was Markham's
College Weekend game and was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. The
fast paced, hard hitting match lasted less than 2 hours and the Waxers continue
to be stymied as the 2003-04 season opens.
Hamilton
opened the scoring first, mid way through the first period but the lead was
short lived. Just under two minutes after surrendering the first goal, Markham
responded to notch the score at 1-1. Ryan Olidis led the rush up the ice
and after a nifty move on the Hamilton defenseman, his wrist shot was stopped
by the Red Wings' goaltender. Rainor Guminny swooped in to pick up the
garbage and roofed the puck home for his second of the year, and second in as
many games. The 1-1 score lasted for through the remainder of the first
and all of the second period.
Hamilton
struck first in the third to take a 2-1 lead when they converted on an innocent
looking shot during a powerplay. Markham bounced back quickly again and
again behind a hard end-to-end rush by Olidis. This time, Olidis grabbed
a Jamie Wright clearing pass and skated in uncontested before beating the
goalie with a hard wrist shot to the blocker side for his 2nd of the
year. The 2-2 tie lasted for the next 7 plus minutes and the echoes of
overtime beckoned the Waxers for the fifth straight game. It was not to
be however, as Hamilton scored the winning goal with less than 6 minutes to
play and prevented the Waxers from claiming any points from this match.
