Fatigued,
understaffed and playing in other people’s equipment – that is how you
could describe the Markham Waxers as they entered
their third game in just 43 hours on Sunday, traveling to play North York as
the two teams were tied in points for third place in the Division, 1 point out
of second place. Despite a
terrific start, the fatigue was too much to overcome playing against a strong
Ranger squad and the Waxers lost in regulation for
the first time this season to
North
York
by a 6-5 score.
Markham
came out flying in the first period and skated in to the intermission with a
4-1 lead. Goals by Andrew
Dias, BJ Quinto
and two powerplay markers from Ryan
Olidis did the damage for
Markham
in the opening frame. Unfortunately,
the wheels fell off in the second period as
North
York
’s
fresh legs took over and the Waxers allowed 5
unanswered goals over the middle 20 minutes to fall behind 6-4.
Rather
than allow the game to become a blowout, the Waxers
dug down in the third and somehow found a way to compete with the Rangers,
scoring the only goal as Dias bagged his second of the game midway through the
period to give
Markham
some hope as time wore down. A
gutsy and heartening effort by the Waxers as they
showed tremendous resolve in the face of adversity against a solid,
experienced and well rested opponent.
