The
Waxers found a new way to head to overtime - for the fourth straight time to
open the season. After building what appeared to be a comfortable lead of
5-1 early in the third period, the hard work exhibited all night by the
visiting Panthers started to pay off. Pickering scored 4 unanswered goals
in the third period to tie the game 5-5 and force it to overtime, which
ultimately decided nothing.
Markham
opened the scoring in the first when Daniel Torres (making his first appearance
of the year), tore down the left wing after receiving an outlet pass from
Albert Ferrante. Torres crossed the blueline, pulled the puck to the
middle and fired home a powerplay marker for the 1-0 lead. Pickering
would tie the score with a late powerplay goal of their own.
The
Waxers seemed to blow the game open in the second period by scoring the only
three goals of the middle frame. Rainor Guminny pounced on a funny hop in
the Panther end and roofed a wrist shot for his first of the year to make it
2-1. The Waxers upped it to 3-1 when Andrew Dias and
Nathaniel Brooks
worked a give-and-go perfectly down low in the Panther end with Dias centering
the puck to Brooks for the easy slam dunk. Markham's fourth goal came on
the heels of a ferocious check by Ben
Cottreau. This caused a turnover
behind the net and Cottreau passed it out, from his knees, to Derrell Levy wide
open in front for Levy's 3rd of the year. The period ended 4-1 Markham.
The
Waxers wasted no time in getting things started in the third when Cottreau
bagged a powerplay goal for the 5-1 lead. Jamie Wright had passed it up
to Cottreau on ther rush and Cottreau bullet shot hit the net before the goalie
even moved. That was pretty much the last good thing that happened for
Markham the rest of the way.
