Why would the Markham fans
expect anything different than what they had all year? Heading in to the
second game in as many nights with the Major Islanders, the Waxers had a chance
to take over third spot in the OPJAHL South Division, and again, fell flat on
their face, losing by a 7-4 count
to Thornhill.
The Waxers started out strong,
scoring the opening two goals of the game, before Thornhill would get one back
before the end of the first period. The Waxers powerplay clicked early to
make it 1-0 as Nathaniel
Brooks was "johnny-on-the-spot" and banged home a rebound after Ben
Cottreau and Ryan Olidis
had whacks at the bouncing puck. Then Riley
Hill scored a beautiful half-breakaway goal, set up perfectly by Josh
Jacobs before deking the Islanders' netminder, for the 2-0 lead after only
7:24.
In the second, the Waxers
again struck early to take a 3-1 lead, when Brooks got his second of the night
on a spinning backhand slapper (with assists to Derrell
Levy and Stephen Wong) but
that was the last of the upper hand for Markham. Thornhill tied the score
before the end of the second setting up a repeat of the previous night - a tie
entering the third period.
The third belonged to Thornhill who scored 3 goals
on seemingly harmless plays and added an empty net powerplay goal for insurance
in the final minute. Cottreau scored the lone Markham goal, to briefly
tie the score at 4-4, after being set up deep in the Islanders end by B
J Quinto.
