Not the
prettiest game ever played between these two rivals, but as usual, it was an
exciting affair as the Waxers made their first trip to Wexford to take the
Raiders in the two teams second meeting of the year. The Waxers dug an early
hole, but were able to climb back and out last the Raiders, 6-5 in overtime.
The
game was just 1:31 old by the time Wexford had surged out to a 2-0 lead.
The Waxers cut in to the lead at the 3:28 mark when Andrew Dias and Jason Duffy
combined on the forecheck to cause the turnover and then find Ben Cottreau in
front for his 18th of the year. The Waxers then tied the game before the
midway point when Daniel Torres scored his first of three on the night banging
in a powerplay rebound after Duffy and Jeff Paisley had the first two shots in
the scramble. The Raiders would take the lead late in the period and the first
ended 3-2 Wexford.
Ethan
Gazdic came in to start the second period and played solid the rest of the way
to earn his second victory in as many games. The Waxers tied the score in
the opening minute of the second when Torres took an outlet pass from Josh
Jacobs and went all the way himself to pound in his second goal of the
night. Wexford took the lead with a powerplay goal of their own before
the Waxers powerplay struck again. The Waxers tied the score on another Torres
powerplay goal, a bullet slapshot from the halfboards, again assisted by Duffy
and Paisley. Markham took their first lead of the night when
Cottreau moved the puck to the point to Mike Standon who fed the puck low to
Nathaniel Brooks and his centering pass found Jacobs at the back door for the
slam dunk goal and the 5-4 lead heading to the third.
The
third was tightly played and saw Gazdic make a number of terrific saves early
in the period when the Waxers were busy killing off two penalties. The
Waxers missed a couple of glorious chances to add an insurance marker and sure
enough, Wexford would get the tying goal shortly after the Waxers misfired on a
breakaway. The teams entered overtime 5-5 but the 5 minute extra period
did not last long. In the opening minute, Rainor Guminny caused a
turnover in the Wexford end and fed the puck behind the net to Ryan
Olidis. Skating up the wall, Olidis turned and fired a hard wrist shot at
the net that the Wexford goalie got a glove on but could not hold on to and the
puck dropped in to the net for the winning goal.
