Anyone
will tell you, people can accept physical mistakes better than mental mistakes.
Case in point, a good performance by the Waxers was tainted on Saturday night
by some mental errors that led directly to three of the Newmarket goals.
The Waxers
came out in the second game in two nights and faced a good Newmarket Hurricanes
club. The Waxers played well early on, took the game to the Hurricanes and
would leave the first period up 1-0 thanks to a quick shot from hash marks from
Ben Cottreau on the power play. Ryan Olidis and
Albert Ferrante would garner
assists on the play, Cottreau's second of the season.
The second
started the same way the Waxers played well and found the net, again on the
powerplay. After a rush up the ice, their was a rebound and a goal mouth
scramble that resulted in Andrew Dias knocking home a goal, with
Josh Jacobs
and Nathaniel Brooks earning the assists. However, as the middle of the period
approached the Waxers started to droop. The Hurricanes converted a nice goal on
the powerplay then converted two bad turnovers into goals before the period was
out. The Hurricanes left the second up 3-2.
The third
saw the Waxers return to form, and perhaps even improve some. It's my opinion
that the Hurricanes tender was the sole difference in the third, as the Waxers
poured it on. After several good chances, the Waxers eventually found the net
about halfway through the third converting on another powerplay. Surging in to
the Newmarket end on a 3-on-2 rush, Jacobs would find the net finishing off the
passing play started by Cottreau and Brooks.
Overtime
would not prove well for the Waxers again on this night as the Hurricanes
converted another bad giveaway into the game winner.
There have
been positives for the Waxers even with to early season losses as they have
battled back on 2 consecutive nights to tie up a game in the third period
(while not allowing a third period goal). This refuse to lose attitude should
serve them well in the future. However, the Waxers are still winless and need
to capture a full two points soon in order to take advantage of an early, home
loaded schedule. Hopefully, as the players become more and more comfortable and
confident in the system and their abilities, the Waxers will avoid overtime and
secure some wins in regulation time.
