Markham Waxers Game Report

OCT. 26/2003 (Game 18) P1 P2 P3 OT FINAL
ST MICHAEL'S BUZZERS 2 3 1 - 6
MARKHAM WAXERS 4 1 2 - 7

The meetings with last year's playoff opponents continued on Sunday as the Waxers travelled to St Michael's to take on the Buzzers.  As usual, the game was extremely entertaining featuring blazing speed, sharp puck movement, numerous scoring opportunities and a high score.  The Waxers were able to come out on top as they snuck out of St Mike's with a well deserved 7-6 victory.

The Buzzers got on the board first, less than 7 minutes in to the game but the Waxers responded less than a minute later.  Joel Lenius would take an outlet pass from Josh Jacobs while on the powerplay and then blast home his first Junior A goal with a hard slapshot from just inside the blueline.  The Waxers would reel off the next three goals to take a 4-1 lead before the Buzzers would make it 4-2 before the end of the first period.  Markham second goal, also on the powerplay, saw Jacobs and Rainor Guminny cycle the puck behind the net before Jacobs found Ryan Olidis in the slot for his first of two on the night.  Riley Hill would bang home his third of the year after some nice forechecking by Stephen Wong and Nathaniel Brooks set up Hill in front of the Buzzers net for a backhand chip shot.  Then, Olidis paid the price on the wall to get the puck out of the Waxer zone and Brooks won the race for the puck and slid a beautiful behind the back pass to a wide open Guminny who made no mistake on the breakaway for the 4-1 lead.

The seesaw battle ensued as the Buzzers scored the first three in the second to take a 5-4 lead before another three way passing play by the Waxers would tie the score.  Andrew Dias started with the puck in the neutral zone and headmanned it to Olidis.  He bumped the puck over to Guminny who would cross the blueline and then drop the puck back to Dias who slid it over to Olidis and he hit the top corner for the tie game.

That set the stage for the nail biting third period in which both teams had glorious chances early on to take the lead but the score would remain tied until the 12:28 mark when the Waxers would score the go ahead marker.  After causing a turnover in the neutral zone, Derrell Levy raced after the puck as the Buzzers goalie did likewise.  Arriving just ahead of the goalie, Levy momentum caused the puck to deflect over the goalie and after coming to rest in the goal crease, a wide open Jeff Weiss buried it in to the yawning cage for the 6-5 lead.  The Waxers solidified their lead when scoring leader Ben Cottreau stole the puck in the St Michael's end and roofed a blazing wrist shot for the eventual game winner, his 16th of the year and a shorthanded marker to boot.  The Buzzers scored once in the final minute with the goalie out for an extra attacker but it was the Waxers who went home happy on this night.
