The
first match up this season between the teams that provided such an entertaining
South Division Final in 2003 would go to the visiting Raiders by a 4-2
count. Markham battled hard all night and out shot Wexford 44-19, but
were stymied by a hot Raider goaltender.
Wexford
scored the only two goals of the first period and thus, enjoyed a 2-0 lead as
the second began with the Waxers on the powerplay. It took only 36
seconds for the Waxers to cut in to the lead when Daniel
Torres corralled a Nathaniel
Brooks pass at the side of the net and stuffed it home for his 5th of the
season (the other assist went to Ben
Cottreau. Wexford would surtge out ahead 4-1 before the period ended.
The
Waxers pounded the net in the third but were only able to sneak one goal past
the goalie on a beautiful second effort goal by Riley
Hill. Coming out through the neutral zone, Hill and Josh
Jacobs played a little give and go to send Jacobs in to the Wexford zone
carrying the puck. Hill charged the net hard with a backchecker draped
all over him and Jacobs threaded the needle between the defenseman and the
goaltender with a terrific pass which Hill buried as he was being hauled down
from behind. Markham would get no closer and loss allowed Wexford to
leapfrog the Waxers in the standings.
