It was
almost like "deja vu all over again" as the Waxers made their first
trip to the home of the South Division leading North York Rangers and went home
disappointed on the heels of a 4-3 overtime loss. This is the second of
three games this year between the two that went to overtime, North York has won
them both, and this sets a franchise record for most overtime losses in one
season at 4.
Markham
started out strong and controlled the first half of the game. Markham
took an early 1-0 lead on the second shift of the game when Ben Cottreau faked
(or fanned - it was hard to tell) a slapshot and made a pass to Ryan Olidis in
front who buried the puck past the sprawling goaltender for his first of two
that period. Then with just under 5 minutes left in the period, Cottreau
won a faceoff in the North York zone cleanly back to David
Lyall. His low
point shot was stopped but Olidis was there to slam home the rebound and the
Waxers went to the first intermission up 2-0.
The
Rangers bagged an early powerplay goal in the second to make it 2-1 but Markham
restored its two goal lead just under 2 minutes later. In a carbon copy
of the second goal, Jeff Weiss won the draw back to
Albert Ferrante and after his
shot was stopped, Stephen Wong was there to bang in his second in two games for
the last Waxer goal of the day.
The Waxers then gave the game away spending 16 of the final 30 minutes of the
game killing penalties and the Rangers capitalized tying the score before the
end of the second period.
North
York ultimately won just 18 seconds in to the overtime off a harmless rush to
keep themselves in first and see the Waxers grab a single point to place
themselves alone in third in the South Division.
