A dominant
performance by the blue and white in a game that was only as close as it was
because of the strong goaltending by the Vipers' goalie before 2 late goals
blew the game open in a 6-2 victory by Markham.
Coming
24 hours after a less than satisfactory effort in Newmarket, the Waxers out
hustled and out competed the visitors for a full 60 minutes. Vaughan
would get on the board first, scoring just 4:05 in to the game but the Waxers
would tie the game in the final minutes of the period to send the teams
deadlocked 1-1 after the opening period. Some strong forechecking
resulted in a tunrover in the Vaughan end that Riley Hill scooped up and then
fed a nice pass to Stephen Wong charging the net. Wong's initial shot was
stopped by B.J. Quinto roared in and buried the rebound for hisd second goal of
the year.
The
middle frame was all Markham but it took until past the halfway point before
the Waxers would hit pay dirt. When they did, it was thanks to leading
scorer Ben Cottreau who buried his 15th of the year with assists going to
Ryan
Olidis and Andrew Dias. The Waxers upped their lead when Olidis scored
the eventual game winner in a 4-on-4 situation with just 3.2 seconds left on
the clock. Cottreau won the draw cleanly back to Mike Standon who fed
Olidis in the Waxers end and the rest was all Olidis who went end to end for
his 5th goal this season.
The
Waxers opened up a 4-1 lead a few minutes after a 20 minute delay for a broken
pane of safety glass was repaired early in the third period. Dias and
Nathaniel Brooks teamed up on a pretty goalmouth passing play to give Dias his
second of the year. Vaughan would cut in to the lead mid-way through the
third but the Waxers scored late on the powerplay (Brooks from Cottreau and
Daniel Torres) and even strength (Wong's first of the year from Albert Ferrante
and Jeff Weiss) to complete the rout.
Anthony Guadagnolo stopped 23 shots
on his way to his second victory of the season.
