Sunday
Bloody Sunday, at least at home it is. Maybe too much Turkey Day or the thought
of Turkey Day was looming in the Waxers minds. Anyway, for the second straight
week the Waxers were not ready to play at the drop of the puck at 12:30pm. The
Waxers played a lack luster affair against a skilled Collingwood Blues hockey
club and most likely benefited from a club that was ending a 3 games in 2 1/2
days schedule.
The first
period saw the Blues take it to the Waxers. They scored two goals in the first
10 minutes and the Waxers decided to shake things up by changing the goalie.
Anthony Guadagnolo came in and seemed to give the Waxers a lift. Late in the
period while on the power-play, after some great cycle work along the boards,
Ryan Olidis chipped the puck up to Ben Cottreau at the half-boards, he spun
around a checker and slide a hard pass across to Nathaniel Brooks on the other
side of the ice for the one-timer into the yawning cage. The period would end
2-1 for Collingwood.
The second
saw the Blues add to the score and
the Collingwood goalie start to "earn his pay check" so to speak. The
Waxers started to come around a bit and get more shots and better chances. the
period drew to a close at 3-1.
The third
saw the Waxers shorten the bench a little and let those that proved they wanted
to play, play. This seemed to work as the hard working efforts started to pay
dividends about halfway into the third. after some hard work backchecking,
Rainor Guminny broke out of the Waxers end and headed into the Blues zone a
pass to Books was deflected to Derrell
Levy up on the rush. He
chipped it back to Guminny who attempted to feed the wide open Brooks but his
pass was deflected off two defensemen and the goalie before sliding into the
net. It was the good break the Waxers had been looking for. They began to come
on gang busters now. As the games wound down, on a rush up the ice, Olidis took
the puck and wired a hard slap shot from just outside the blueline that went
high and wide over the net clanged off the glass and rebounded out in front,
the bouncing puck deflected off Stephen Wong as he attempted a shot and went
straight to Josh Jacobs whose quick release tied up the game. The Waxers then
appeared to be too happy and satisfied. They relaxed and the Blues stormed
after them. Many in attendance thought back to the first 4 games of the season,
but Guadagnolo stood tall and preserved the tie in regulation.
The
meeting before the overtime proved to be the wake-up call for this Waxers club
as the overtime was all Waxers. They were buzzing all around the Blues net and
if the Blues goalie wasn't as sharp on this day maybe the Waxers could have
found that other point. But he was sharp and the Waxers settled for the draw.
It made the fans wonder what would have happened had the Waxers shown up ready
to play??
