The Waxers bounced back in
to the win column thanks to a Ben Cottreau hat trick and a 4 goal third period
outburst to defeat the host Vaughan Vipers by a 6-3 score in the first meeting
of the year between the two teams.
Vaughan opened the
scoring in the first period and took a 1-0 lead in to the second period.
The Waxers struck quickly in the second, taking a 2-1 lead before the period
was 8 minutes old. Cottreau bagged the first one, scooping up a loose
puck after some good forechecking by Andrew Dias and
Jason Duffy, and ripping
it home past the Vipers' goalie. Duffy then got on the the board with his
first of two on the night, a powerplay marker with an assist to Nathaniel
Brooks. The Vipers scored twice in the final half of the period to take a
3-2 lead in to the third.
Perhaps the most
dominant period of hockey of the year for the Waxers as they scored 4 times and
outshot the Vipers 11-6 in the final 20 minutes. Cottreau got his second,
almost a repeat of his first (with assists again to Duffy and Dias) to square
the game at 3-3 just 3:30 in to the period. Daniel Torres scored the
eventual winning goal, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Brooks by one-timing
the goal mouth feed for his 2nd of the year. Duffy upped the lead to 5-3
with a bullet slapshot to the top corner and Cottreau finished the night off
with an empty netter in the final minute.
For Waxer fans, one can
only hope that this effort is a glimpse of things to come and is the start of
some sort of winning streak for the boys in Blue and White as they hope to
climb up the standings in the tight South Division race.
