"Shootout"
was a proper name for the St.Mike's tournament. Every game saw a
number of goals and the final game saw 14.
The first period saw a fired up
Waxer squad take it to the Buzzers. Stephen Wong opened the scoring.
BJ Quinto started the play with a shot from the side boards, Riley
Hill went charging for the rebound and was sent flying over the
goalie, Wong picked up the puck and circled around the goalie and put
the puck in the yawning cage. The Waxers would strike again on the
powerplay as Derrell Levy would feed Jamie
Wright the puck at the point who dumped it low to Ben Cottreau
behind the net. Cottreau stepped out in front and stuffed the puck
past the goaltender for the 2-0 lead. Then shortly
after that, Hill would pick off a Buzzer pass up the middle and take a
couple of strides into the Buzzer zone and rifle a slap shot past the
goalie.
The second period saw the Buzzers fight back early only to lose ground
late. The Buzzers scored twice then the Waxers took over with three
nice goals. While 4 on 4 Cottreau won a face just outside the Buzzer
zone corralled the puck and entered the zone feed a streaking Ryan
Olidis at the boards and he sniped the top corner with a rocket. Later
the Waxers found themselves on a 4 on 3 powerplay and Quinto would
deflect a low Wright shot over the sprawling tender for a very
pretty goal. Then to finish the scoring on the period, Cottreau would
score again on a nice 2 on 1 shorthanded passing play with Olidis, as Albert Ferrante
would draw the other assist.
The third saw the Waxers come
out quickly as Josh Jacobs would feed a flying Nathaniel Brooks who
converted on the breakaway beating the goalie on a nice deke. The
Buzzers would the storm back and try to make a game of it with 3 quick
goals. But the Waxers did not fold, and on a nice play, Stephen Weiss
would head into the Buzzer zone and put a hard shot on net. The goalie
made the save, but Jacobs would be there to sweep up as he sent a spin
around shot through the goalie's legs. Cottreau would finish up,
getting the hat trick on an empty net goal from Levy and Rothwell that
made for the 9-5 final.
The Waxers saw scoring from a multitude of sources as both rookies and
veterans found the net. Ben Cottreau was the Waxers lone multiple goal
scorer with the hat trick. After the game he was selected as the Waxer
Player-of-the-Game and was chosen for the All-Star team with teammates
Ryan Olidis and Anthony Guadagnolo.
