WAXERS
WIN FIRST GAME OF THE SHOOTOUT SERIES Markham
teamed up with town rival Stouffville in
what became the first ever game played in the St Michael’s Shootout
Series. The Waxers
were victorious after a 6-3 victory launching them in to the Final on
Saturday afternoon.
Markham
opened the scoring just past the 15 minute mark when Albert Ferrante
kept the puck in at the blueline after
some hard forechecking by the forwards.
Ferrante chipped the puck towards
the net where Joel Lenius scooped it up
and slipped a slick pass to Josh Jacobs for an easy open net goal.
After Stouffville tied the game a
few minutes later,
Markham
would head to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead after Ben Cottreau
tipped home a Joe Rothwell point shot with
Jamie Wright picking up the second assist.
Stouffville tied the game 5 minutes
in to the second period before the Waxers
would blow the game open somewhat bagging the next two goals in the
period. Ferrante
scored the third goal after receiving a nice feed from Andrew Dias
which was followed by the eventual game winner scored by Nathaniel
Brooks. Attempting to
break free while killing a penalty, Brooks
fought off two backcheckers before scoring
a beautiful goal, roofing the puck as he was dragged down from behind
as he approached the net. The
second finished 4-2.
Markham
scored the opening two goals of the third to up the score to 6-2
before Stouffville would add a late goal
to make the final 6-3. Ryan
Olidis scored the 5th goal on a
blast of a slapshot of a nice drop pass
from Derrell Levy on a 3-on-2 rush (Cottreau
picked up the second assist). Levy
then scored a goal of his own, receiving a pass from Ferrante,
and deking the goalie.
Levy was selected as the Waxers
Player-of-the-Game by the Tournament Committee.
