WAXERS GET ONE GOAL CLOSER
BUT HAVE SAME RESULT
Game Two in
pre-season, while showing a similar result, was a completely different
ball game. The Waxers squad saw a few changes as some veterans got the
night off while a couple of the new blood was brought in. The
Newmarket team, on the other hand, was barely a shell of what the were the night before as
some where in the vicinity of 15 players were changed.
Despite this obvious difference, the Waxers
squad came out with a much different work ethic then they had the
previous night. They battled hard for loose pucks and won tough
battles throughout the night. Both goalies again showed well.
The Waxers took the lead in the first period on
an excellent power-play marker. Ben Cottreau fed
Jason Duffy as he
exploded out of the Waxers zone and Duffy went in on a one on two and made a
quick move and shot a laser to the top corner. The Hurricane
goaltender never had a chance. The Hurricanes came back quickly
scoring on an odd man rush late in the period to send it to the rooms
tied.
The second period was much the same story. The
game was a quick physical affair and an excellent one to watch for
those of us in the stands. Darryl Flowers sent a pass to Cottreau
who put the Waxers into the lead again with a smoking slap shot to the
top corner blocker side that the goalie just wasn't expecting.
Newmarket would tie the game again. Then, on the powerplay, Steve
McQueen would redirect a cross ice pass from Robert Bedard and deflect it
into the wide open cage as the Newmarket goalie slid across the ice.
Newmarket would score another to make the period end in a 3-3 draw.
The third saw the Hurricanes' fresher legs start
to take over. They scored to lead 4-3. The Waxers fought hard and on a
fantastic goal saw B.J. Quinto tap a Cottreau rebound out of mid
air into the top corner to tie the game. However, the Hurricanes
still had one goal left in their tank while the Waxers ran short of
goals and time, losing 5-4.
This was a good game where the squad fought
through the pain and exhaustion of 2 games in 24 hrs. The goalies
played well making many great saves each. They showed great poise and
skill in the net. The Waxers are now off the the St. Michael's
Inaugural Shootout tourney on Friday September 5 and Saturday September 6.
