PRESEASON STARTS WITH A
DEFEAT
The 2002-2003
pre-season began last night at Markham Centennial Arena, however it
wasn’t the start that the Waxers were looking for. With the team
almost set, the Waxers faced the Newmarket Hurricanes who dressed a
line-up with a number of guys fighting for a small number of spots.
This hunger was evident from the very beginning. The Hurricanes came
out on fire. They took the game to the laidback Waxer squad and ended
the period up 2-0 on the scoreboard and badly out shooting the Waxers.
The
second period saw little change as the Hurricanes poured it on. Then around the
10:00
mark the
Waxers changed their goalie the score was 3-1. Russell Brownell
showed well in his start facing a number of tough challenges head on.
Daniel Manocchio then entered the game to show his stuff, his
first test in junior was an unfriendly 2 on 0 which lead to a goal for
Newmarket,. Stephen Wong supplied the only Waxer highlight with a powerplay marker
from Scott Badali and Steve McQueen. This put the Waxers down 4-1. The
Hurricanes answered back quickly. Newmarket would
find the net again late in the period and head into the dressing room
up 5-1.
The
third period showed that this Waxers squad has pride as they would go
down swinging. Manocchio would hold the Hurricanes scoreless making a
number of big saves. While Darryl Flowers and Derrel Levy would both score tallies
to make the score a respectable 5-3. Jason Duffy and
Albert Ferrante assisted on Flowers marker while Levy converted a turnover brake-away
into a beautiful unassisted marker. The Waxers tried valiantly to bring the score tighter but were
thwarted time and again. The game ended in the 5-3 final.
The
new faces on the Waxers faired well and learned a lot about just what
it takes to win in Junior hockey. While the vet’s got an early
reminder of what they need to go through game in and game out in order
to put up as many W’s as they can. 60 minutes is a must, if you come
out slow it becomes a tough hill to climb real quickly. Luckily, it is
early, and a good time to learn this lesson. They
also got a good view at just what they can accomplish turning around a
game that was out of hand to make it interesting. The will to do well
is strong in this years squad as they have something to defend that no
Waxers squad in the last 30 years has had to defend, the South
Division Championship.
