Just less than 24 hours after completing an exciting opening
game in their first round playoff series, the Waxers and Couchiching Terriers
were right back at it for game 2. Feeding
off the momentum gathered from the double-OT victory in game 1,
Markham
handed the visitors their
second straight defeat, this time by a healthy 5-1 margin.
The Waxers got on the board first, scoring the only goal of
the opening period. With Stephen
Wong applying the pressure on the forecheck, he made a centering pass out in
front that slid out to the blueline to Albert
Ferrante.
He made a slick little backhand pass to a wide open Evan Erdmann
near
the face off dot and Erdmann one-timed it home for his first of two on the
night and the 1-0 first intermission lead.
Markham
scored the eventual game
winning goal on a powerplay to open the second period when Ben Cottreau scored
his first of the playoffs just 28 seconds in to the frame.
Chris Korte and Nathaniel Brooks combined out at the points to set up
Cottreau down low and he rifled a shot past the goalie on the blocker side for
the 2-0 lead. The Waxers would
score again before the period ended to take a 3-0 lead in to the final period.
Derrell Levy won a battle for a loose puck in the Couchiching end and
cycled the puck behind the net to Wong. With
the goalie moving to the other side of the net looking for the puck, Wong
passed it back out the direction it had come to him and there was Erdmann wide
open and with the yawning cage to redirect the puck in to for his second goal
of the night.
Couchiching made it interesting early in the third by scoring
their lone goal to make it 3-1 with
15:06
left on the clock but
Markham
put the final nails in the
coffin, scoring two goals in less than 4 minutes in the middle of the period.
The fourth goal was credited to Ryan Olidis when an
Andrew Dias pass to
Rainor Guminny started a 2-on-1. Guminny
faked a shot and slid the puck to Olidis and his return pass to Guminny hit a
Terrier defender and slid in to the net. Brooks
then ended the scoring when he took a Daniel Torres pass and buried his first
of the playoffs from the high slot on a 3-on-2 rush started by Jeff
Paisley. Greg van’t
Hof
earned his second straight victory, turning aside 29
shots.
