The Waxers started to look more like themselves in this game,
and although out shooting the Rattlers 45-31, they could not solve the Rattler
goalie enough and settled for a 3-3 tie. This game meant nothing in the
standings but was a preview of the First Round of the Playoffs when the Waxers
met the Rattlers, for the first time since 1997 (which was back when the teams
were in the Metro League and Head Coach Russ Herrington and General Manager
Larry Herrington were then with Thornhill).
Markham controlled the opening period spending almost all of
the twenty minutes in the Rattler end but could only sneak one puck in to the
net and the first ended 1-0 for the Waxers. At the 7:24 mark, Jeff Weiss
and Ryan Olidis were sent off on a 2-on-2 rush after
Ben Cottreau head manned
the puck in the neutral zone. Weiss fed the puck to Olidis and then took
the drop pass and muscled his way to the net, backhanded the puck to the far
side for his 6th goal of the season.
The second period saw the play even out somewhat and the
Rattlers were able to connect twice to the Waxers one goal and the middle frame
ended 2-2. The Waxers goal came from Cottreau who scored on a nifty wrap
around after he, Kevin Cribari and
Andrew Dias buzzed all over the Rattler end
and net early in the second period.
Thornhill took their only lead of the night when they scored
just over 8 minutes in to the third period. Markham responded to tie the
game with 5:44 left on the clock on Mark Menonte's career best 23rd goal of the
season. Dias and Cribari earned assists on the play that saw Dias' wide
shot be collected by Cribari and his centering pass was redirected by Menonte
up and over the goalie's shoulder.
The overtime proved nothing as neither team could pull the
trigger to end the match. Scott Gray played in net for the Waxers,
stopping 28 shots including all 5 in overtime.
