In their final meeting of the year, the Waxers completed a
season sweep of the Axemen by building a lead and then hanging on as Ajax came
back. Anthony Guadagnolo won for the second time on the weekend and the
Waxers stayed three points ahead of second place Wexford with the victory.
The first period started all Waxers as they jumped out to an
early 2-0 lead. Ryan Olidis bagged his 13th goal of the year just 2:08 in
to the game. Albert Ferrante lugged the puck through the neutral zone and
fed a pass to Ben Cottreau near the Ajax blueline. Cottreau bumped it to
Olidis who snapped a low hard shot to the far side for the 1-0 lead. That
was followed just 1:21 later when Jeff Weiss bagged a goal in his second
consecutive game. After Jamie Wright kept the puck in at the blueline,
Weiss walked out in to the front of the net and ripped a low wrist shot past
the blocker of the goalie. Ajax would get one back on a power play and
the first ended 2-1 Markham with the Waxers holding a 14-6 edge in shots.
The second period was a back and forth period with Markham
scoring the lone goal as both goalies made stellar saves throughout the twenty
minutes. On the Markham goal, Wright blasted a shot that just missed the
net and caromed out in front on to the stick of Cottreau. He calmly threw
the puck to the far side for his 24th of the season.
Markham upped the score to 4-1 early in the third when Cottreau
scored his second of the night to reach 25 on the season. Wright kept the
puck in at the blueline and found Cottreau in the face-off circle with a
pass. Cottreau quickly turned and fired the puck which beat the goalie
clean up high on the blocker side at the 1:40 mark of the third. Ajax
would score twice in the next 3:05 to make it interesting but Guadagnolo stood
tall the rest of the way for the Waxers. Ryan Steane inched closer to twenty
goals when he bagged his 18th in to the empty net after a terrific sliding
blocked shot from Ferrante off a face-off in the Waxers end with 30 seconds left in
regulation.
The win marked a special achievement for the Waxers as they
broke in to the 30 win category. The last Waxer team to do so was way
back in the early eighties.
