The hype leading up the Markham Waxers trip to Aurora to face the Tigers was league wide as this was the only meeting between Division leaders on the regular season schedule in the OPJAHL (there is no other crossover except for the South and North).  The fans certainly got their money's worth in the first period alone, probably the best period of Junior hockey played outside of the playoffs in many years.  Alas, the pace could not keep up after an extended intermission, the level of play dropped off and the the game became a rout as Aurora cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Waxers.

Markham opened the scoring in the first on a terrific shorthanded effort by Tony Rossi and Mark Menonte.  Tying the face-off in the Waxers end, Rossi was able to get to the loose puck and poke it past the Tigers defenseman.  Rossi then won the race to the puck in the Tigers end and fed Menonte who was streaking to the net. Menonte one-timed the pass between the Tigers' goalie's legs for the only Markham lead of the game.  The period ended 1-0 for Markham as the Waxers out shot the Tigers 14-7.

The second period saw the Tigers continue to play their game while the Waxers came out asleep and quickly and quietly wilted under the pressure of the big game.  Aurora scored three quick goals to take a 3-1 lead in to the second intermission and then added 3 more in the third to complete the blowout as the Waxers seemed unwilling to try and fight back.  A disappointing display by the young men in Markham sweaters who were taught a lesson about what it takes to be a winner by the North Division leaders.
