Making their first trip to the Buzzers' Den this season, the
Waxers came away with their first victory over St Mike's, riding an efficient
performance to a solid 5-2 victory. Goaltender Scott
Gray was terrific between the pipes stopping 38 shots for the victory,
stuffing the Buzzers on a number of good scoring chances during a 5-on-3 power
play in the first period.
The Waxers controlled the pace of the play from the onset and
left after 20 minutes of play leading 3-0. Just over 5 minutes in to the
period, the Waxers struck as a result of some good forechecking by Pat
Porretta. Taking the body on the dump in, Porretta caused a loose
puck in the corner that Rainor
Guminny jumped on and took directly in front and beat the Buzzers
goaltender to the far side of the net for his 4th goal of the year. Then,
with just over three minutes left in the period, while killing a penalty,
Porretta bagged his first of two on the evening. Ryan
Olidis picked up an errant pass in the Waxers zone and sent Porretta
streaking up the middle from the Waxers blueline. Being chased by two
Buzzers, Porretta won the foot race and in a Kyle Wellwood-like effort, roofed
the puck as he was hauled down from behind for the 2-0 lead. Then, just
after the penalty expired, the Waxers made it 3-0 thanks to some solid work by
the line of Ryan Steane, Kevin
Cribari and Liam Bowen.
Working the cycle to perfection, the trio created two glorious scoring chances
that were stopped before finally cashing in when Bowen cycled it to Steane by
the net and he fed Cribari in the slot for a one timer past the Buzzers goalie.
St Mike's made it interesting early in the second as they
struck for two goals in the opening 5:03. After that however, the Waxers
took the pace of play back and dictated the remainder of the game. The
Waxers would go in to the third period up by two goals when Nathaniel
Brooks scored with 6:43 left in the middle frame. Mike
Diamond dumped the puck in and Andrew
Dias went after, throwing a crushing body check on the Buzzers'
defenseman. Daniel Torres
picked off the puck and threw it back behind the net where Brooks brought it
out in to the crease and shot the puck past the screened goalie for the two
goal bulge.
The third period was dominated on the shot count by St Mike's
but the Waxers controlled the puck and allowed St Mike's only a couple of
quality shots in the 14 they attempted. Markham scored the only goal of
the period on one of the prettiest passing plays of the year. On a power
play in the opening minutes of the period, Jamie
Wright had the puck at the blueline and found Mark
Menonte coming through the middle of the box at the hash marks.
Menonte was skating towards the right wing boards and took the place and threw
a blind, behind the back pass to Porretta at the side of the net on the left
wing side of the ice for the easy slam dunk goal and his team leading 36th goal
and the final tally of the night.
