Finishing up before the Christmas holdiays, the Waxers
travelled to Oshawa in search of some revenge after being soundly defeated in
their last trip East. Markham repaid the Legionaires to the tune of a 6-2
defeat which was as workmanlike and efficient as they come.
Oshawa opened the scoring in the first to take a short lived
(and only) lead. Markham would tie things up just over 5 minutes later
when Stephen Wong pounced on a
misplayed Kevin Cribari dump
in and banged it in to the open net for his 4th of the campaign. Ryan
Olidis (scoring in his fourth straight game) gave the Waxers a 2-1 lead
when he scored on a powerplay, the recipient of a beautiful pass from Tony
Rossi, tapping it in to the open side. Jamie
Wright also earned an assist on the goal. Oshawa would tie the game
before the period ended.
Markham took it the Legionaires in the second period only to
see their best chances thwarted time and again by the Oshawa goalie. They
finally broke through in the dying minutes of the period, scoring twice in the
final 1:09 to take a 4-2 lead in to the third period. The game winning
goal was scored by Mark Menonte
on a nice 3-on-2 rush led by Mike
Diamond. Menonte drove through the middle and after taking a soft
saucer pass from Diamond, beat the goalie blocker side with a quick wrist
shot. Then, in the final seconds, Cribari found Nathaniel
Brooks at the far blue line to spring Brooks on a one-on-one.
Reminiscent of Keith Primeau's triple overtime goal in playoffs a few years
back, Brooks was on his off wing and deked the defenseman to his forehand and
ripped a high wrist shot half-way through the move that beat the goalie over
the shoulder before he could even move.
The Waxers continued the onslaught in the third period, upping
the score to 5-2 on a Ryan Steane
goal less than eight minutes in. Liam
Bowen took a Cribari pass in the neutral zone, drove wide past the defense
and then made a terrific goalmouth, backhand pass to Steane for his 17th of the
year. Then, while killing a penalty and down to three men, Menonte jumped
on a loose puck off the faceoff, poked it to centre ice and then beat everyone
to the puck, scoring on the breakaway for his team leading 3rd shorthanded goal
and his 20th goal f the year.
Kevin Sit earned
the victory in net, his second win of the weekend, stopping 18 shots.
