In their fourth of six meetings on the year, the Waxers visited
Thornhill to take on the Rattlers on a rare Monday night game. The
improved Rattlers gave the Waxers a tough test throughout the night but Markham
was able to outlast the hosts and earn a 7-4 victory.
Markham opened the scoring just past the 7 minute mark when
Mark Menonte scored his first of two on the night. Jamie Wright picked up
the puck near the Waxer blueline and sent a pass right up the middle to Menonte
who was standing alone in behind the Rattler defense. A nice deke on the
breakaway resulted in Menonte's 14th goal of the season. Thornhill tied
the game less than a minute later before Markham would take the lead for good,
on the power play, midway through the period. Wright kept the puck in at
the blueline and fed Liam Bowen on the half-boards. Bowen's pass to
Menonte in the middle of the box was redirected in to the net for the 2-1 lead.
The second period saw the Waxers attempt to blow the game open
when they scored the next two goals in the first 8 minutes. After Michael
Barrett rushed the puck up the ice and stormed the net, Stephen Wong was there
to clean up the garbage, banging home his second goal of the season.
Then, catching the Rattlers on a poor change, Wright moved up the ice with the
puck and found Daniel Torres just inside the Rattler zone. Torres made a
great backdoor pass to Jeff Weiss who tapped the puck in to the empty side of
the net for a 4-1 lead. Thornhill made things interesting by scoring
twice more before the end of the period.
Markham opened the scoring in the third period, pounding home
two goals only 26 seconds apart in the opening 5 minutes to put some breathing
space between themselves and the pesky snakes. First, Tony Rossi took the
puck up the ice on the left wing and let a hard, low slapper go at the net
which was stopped by the Thornhill goalie but Kevin Cribari was there to bang
in the rebound for the eventual game winner. Then, Wong and Torres
combined to set up Pat Porretta for the 6-3 lead as his one-timer hit the back
of the net for Porretta's team leading 24th goal of the season. Thornhill
got one back with just less than 8 minutes left before the Waxers completed the
scoring with 3:44 left on the clock. Menonte and Porretta were cycling
the puck down low in the Thornhill end while Aaron Buckstein slid in to the
high slot. Menonte found Buckstein there and he one-timed the puck in to
the top corner of the net for his first Junior A goal, making the final
7-4. Kevin Sit was in net for the Waxers and stopped 35 shots for his
second victory of the weekend.
