Division rivals Markham and Wexford squared off Sunday night at
the SAG for their fourth and final meeting of the season and decided nothing in
an exciting end-to-end overtime affair. The tie created a deadlock between the
two teams as the season series now ends 1-1-2. Both teams won big on the road
and both teams battled back to tie games in the later stages of the other two games.
A big point for Markham as they played undermanned with Ben
Cottreau and Mark Menonte both out of the lineup.
Anthony Guadagnolo
played well in net for the Waxers stopping 35 shots. The Waxers peppered
the Raiders netminder with 44 shots, many of them quality chances, and had the
goalie beat twice in overtime but the crossbar was there to prevent a victory.
After a scoreless first period, the two teams abandoned all
sense of defensive play in the second combining for 6 goals. Markham
jumped on the board first at the seven minute mark of the second on an even
strength goal. Kevin Cribari and
Liam Bowen battled two Raider players in
the offensive end and Bowen came out with the puck. Taking it to the
front of the net, he froze the goalie by looking in to the slot at an open
linemate and then fired it between the goalie's legs for his 22nd of the
season. Wexford tied the game 3 minutes later and the Waxers followed
that up 1:15 later with another go ahead goal. Streaking up the ice, Pat
Porretta gave the puck to Tony Rossi as he drove wide over the blueline and he
shovelled it forward to Mike Barrett who pounded it in to the net for the 2-1
lead. Wexford again tied it up less than two minutes later. Markham
took the lead for the final time later in the period when they scored on the
powerplay. Jamie Wright fed the puck across the blueline to Barrett, and
he sent a low wrister towards the net that Ryan Steane redirected in to the net
for the 3-2 lead. Wexford tied the game before the period ended.
With just over 7 minutes left in regulation, Wexford grabbed
their one and only lead to make it 4-3. The Waxers would tie the game
with just under three minutes remaining in the period on a pretty four way
passing play. Mike Diamond won a battle for the puck in the Waxer end and
Wright picked it up. He head manned the puck to Rossi who carried the
puck through the neutral zone before feeding Porretta on the wall.
Porretta made a terrific cross ice backhanded pass to Nathaniel Brooks
streaking untouched to the net and he roofed a one-timer for the game-tying
goal.
