Markham made their only trip to Huntsville this season and
used a 5 goal outburst in the third period to bring home the two points after a
9-2 victory. Much has been said about the hard-luck Wildcats throughout
the league this year, but give their players credit, they competed hard and
cleanly for the entire 60 minutes Friday night.
After seeing the Wildcats open the scoring just over 6 minutes
in to the game, the Waxers got on the board and took the lead, all in one
shift. First, Jeff Weiss and
Pat Porretta combined on the forecheck to
cause a turnover, which Porretta centered to Mark
Menonte. His one-timer
was in the back of the net before the goalie could move and the game was
tied. It took the same line just 24 seconds to score again as Weiss fed
the puck back to Mike Barrett at the point and he slid it cross-ice to Porretta
for a one-timer of his own. The period ended 2-1 with Markham holding a
13-10 shot advantage.
The second period saw the Waxers score the only two
goals. Ryan Steane and Nathaniel Brooks teamed up to score shorthanded
just 2:32 in to the period. After Brooks stole the puck in the Huntsville
end, he found Steane on the right wing and Steane's low snap shot wrapped in
around the far post for his 14th of the year. Then, with under five
minutes left in the period, Brooks sent a pass to Kevin Cribari streaking
through the neutral zone and he beat the defenseman wide, and sent a backhander
through the legs of the Wildcat goalie for the 4-1 lead.
The Waxers dominated the third period completely, outshooting
the Wildcats 25-5 (to finish with a 51-21 game advantage). Huntsville did
score first to cut the lead to 4-2 but then the Waxers finally broke through
the standout goaltending that Huntsville was receiving. In a little over
two and a half minutes, the Waxers scored four times during a 5 minute major
power play. Ben Cottreau scored the first, assisted by Barrett and
Cribari; Steane added his second from Jamie Wright and
Liam Bowen; Brooks
scored with assists to Weiss and Daniel
Torres; and then Cottreau capped it
assisted by Stephen Wong and Tony
Rossi. Porretta added his second of the
evening, from Cribari and Mike Diamond in the final minute to complete the
scoring.
Kevin Sit stopped 19 shots on his way to the victory in net.
