The Markham Waxers and Oshawa Legionaires hooked up for the
second time in 4 days to complete a home-and-home on Friday night with the
Waxers donning their 3rd jerseys for the affair. Markham earned a split
of the short week series by pounding Oshawa by a 7-1 count, out shooting the
Legionaires for the second straight game, this time by a 44-26 margin.
Pat Porretta open and closed the scoring for the Waxers on his
way to hat trick. The first goal came just under 8 minutes in to the
first period when the Waxers were on a power play. After stopping an
Oshawa dump in, Anthony Guadagnolo moved the puck to
Kevin Cribari who dashed
up the ice and made several nice dekes before sliding the puck across the
offensive zone to Porretta, who then froze the goalie with a fake, and stepped
around to stuff the puck in to the open side for the goal. Porretta would
add his second goal with just under 5 minutes left in the period when Joe
Rothwell made a terrific behind the back pass at the blueline to spring
Porretta in and he beat the Oshawa tender with a hard wrister to the glove
side. Michael Diamond then chipped in his first of the year just 48
seconds later. Ben Cottreau corralled a loose puck in the ciorner and fed
Diamond as he streaked in from the point. Diamond collected his own
rebound and flipped the puck home to give the Waxers a 3-0 lead after one
period.
The second period remained scoreless until Oshawa got on the
board with a power play marker of their own with a little more than 3 minutes
left in the period. Markham would restore their three goal lead with just
25 seconds showing on the clock to take a 4-1 lead in to the third. Tony
Rossi was able to clear the puck from the Waxers zone and made a cross-ice pass
to Cribari near the Oshawa blue line. Cribari drove the defenseman deep
and slid the puck to Cottreau, who turned to receive the puck and did a 180
degree spin and backhand shot which eluded the goalie on the blocker side.
The third period was all Waxers as they scored 3 times.
The scoring started just 1:11 in to the period when Liam Bowen scored to make
it 5-1. Nathaniel Brooks caused a turnover with some strong forechecking
and cycled the puck behind the net to Ryan
Steane. Steane fed Bowen in
front for a one-timer that somehow found its way in to the net in a pinball
fashion. Jamie Wright added to the lead with just over 6 minutes left in
the contest when he followed a Porretta rush up the ice and pounced on a loose
puck firing it low to the far side for the goal. Mark Menonte picked up
the second assist on the play. Porretta capped the evening scoring in the
final minute of play. Steane and Jeff Weiss buzzed all around the Oshawa
end forechecking and Weiss eventually threw the puck out towards the net where
Porretta grabbed it and pounded it in to the wide open side for the final
marker.
Guadagnolo earned his 11th win of the year stopping 25
shots.
