Markham visited Pickering Sunday night looking to avenge an
earlier season loss in the Panther dome. After coming out flying in the
first 20 minutes and barging out to a 3-0 lead, the game became an interesting
one as the Waxers finally outlasted the pesky, undermanned Panthers by a 4-3
count.
Markham blasted 57 shots at the Panther net over the evening
and the spectactular play of the Panther tender kept the game close while
sloppy play in the defensive gameplan allowed Pickering to score 3 goals off
horrendous giveaways.
The line of Mark
Menonte, Ryan Steane and
Liam Bowen accounted
for all the scoring in the first period. Menonte got the Waxers on the
board just 2:12 in to the contest on the power play. Steane and Bowen
worked the puck down low below the goal line from one side of the net to the
other and then Bowen centered the puck to Menonte at the top of the crease for
the goal. Just over 6 minutes later, Bowen intercepted a Pickering pass
at their blueline and skated in unmolested on the Pickering cage. A small
deke later and Bowen roofed the puck for the 2-0 lead. Three minutes
later, again on the power play, it was Steane's turn to score as he took a
Menonte pass on the rush and fooled everyone when he looked pass but snapped
the puck through a screen and between the Panther goalie's legs.
Pickering would get the first 2 goals of the second period to
make it a one goal hockey game heading in to the dying minutes of the period. The
Waxers capitalized again on the power play with less than a minute to play in
the middle stanza, a goal which would stand up as the game winner.
Ben
Cottreau won the faceoff in the offensive zone cleanly back to Joe Rothwell and
his blast from the point eluded the goalie for Rothwell's first Junior A
goal.
Pickering would add their third goal with just under 2 minutes
left in the game but the Waxers would not allow another shot on goal as they
completed their perfect weekend with the victory. Kevin Sit earned his
5th win of the year stopping 25 shots.
