The Waxers faced off against the Wexford Raiders Friday night,
donning their 100th Anniversary Special Edition Sweaters for the second time as
the two clubs squared off for the third time this year. If you missed it then
this won't help you much, just think of a good playoff game and you'll get a
good idea but this time there would be no victor.
After a scoreless first period the Waxers scored the opening
goal when Pat Porretta
squirted past a Raider defender along the left wing boards and fought off a
check as he carried the puck behind the Raider goal before feeding a pass into
the slot area to Tony Rossi
who fired it home for the 1-0 lead. The lead would last but a moment as the
Raiders tied it up nine seconds later, Wexford would take their only lead of
the night later in the period. Late in the period, with just over four minutes
remaining in the period Liam
Bowen wristed the puck along the ice from the top of the left faceoff
circle to even the score at 2-2.
The third period was bookmarked by powerplay goals at the start
of the period and then at the very end of regulation time. The Waxer powerplay
connected quickly when Mark
Menonte won the draw after the powerplay unit hit the ice back to
Kevin Cribari at the
right point, Cribari fed a cross ice pass to
Joe Rothwell at the left
point who then quickly slid the puck towards the Raider goal and
Ryan Steane redirected the
puck into the cage to give Markham a 3-2 lead. That lead looked for a while
like it might stand up but late in the period the Waxers got away from their
game plan and started running around a bit in their own end. With a minute to
go the Raider powerplay hit the ice with six attackers and with just over a
second left on the clock a deflection tied the game at 3-3.
Overtime saw the Waxers brush off the final moments of
regulation time and they took the play to the Raiders but weren't able to cash
in.
Kevin Sit
tended the nets for the Waxers and turned away 38 of 41 Raider shots including
several big stops and notably a big time save on a breakaway at the five
minute mark of the third to preserve the lead at the time at 3-2.
Sunday night Markham travels to Newmarket, game time is 7:30pm.
