Markham wore their new 3rd Jersey tonight to finish off the
home-and-home week with Vaughan and the jerseys seemed to bring some luck the
Waxers way as they stormed from behind for a 4-3 overtime victory. The
jerseys commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Markham participation in the OHA
and will be worn on approximately nine more occasions.
The game in itself was rather slow and boring, until the final
minute and a half of the game when the wild comeback took place. Markham
opened the scoring in the first period when Tony Rossi
bagged a power play
goal for a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes. Ryan Olidis grabbed a
loose puck off the faceoff in the Vipers end and fed Jamie Wright at the
point. His low shot was stopped by the goalie but the rebound found its
way towards Rossi, who backhanded the goal home while on his knees after
getting knocked down in front.
The Vipers would score the next three goals, 2 in the second
period and 1 early in the third period. The game was a close checking one
in which neither team seemed to mount any flow or control over the game for any
extended period of time.
The Vipers held the Waxers in check until the final minute of
play when the tables turned suddenly in the Waxers favour. With the
goalie pulled for an extra attacker while on the power play, Ben Cottreau took
a feed in the slot from Rossi and slammed it home to make it a 3-2 game. Ryan Steane picked up the second assist on the goal with 46 seconds left in
regulation. Then, just 26 seconds later, it was deja vu all over again as
Liam Bowen fed Pat Porretta behind the net and his centering pass to Wright
streaking in from the point found its way through the goalie's legs for a
carbon copy, extra attacker goal to tie the game, 3-3.
Early in to the overtime, the momentum continued on the Waxers
side as they swarmed the net and the Vipers took a penalty. On the
ensuing power play, Mark Menonte fed Bowen who passed it over to Rossi who
found Cottreau back door for an easy empty net slam dunk and the victory.
Two fairly evenly matched teams played two overtime games this
week, and only in the New Millennium can two teams play two games and both
end up taking 3 of a possible 4 points from the week series.
Kevin Sit was solid in net for the Waxers earning the victory
stopping 22 of 25 shots.
