The Waxers were able to steal a point for the 6th straight game
and temporarily are alone in first place after a Monday night OT loss to the
Vaughan Vipers. In the first of this week's home-and-home with the
Vipers, the Waxers took control early but slowly let the game slip away, only
salvaging the point on a last minute goal with the net empty at the Waxers end.
Ben Cottreau opened the scoring early in the first, just 11
seconds in to the game, when his centering pass hit a Vaughan stick and
deflected up and over the Vipers netminder. The Waxers upped the lead to
2-0 when Liam Bowen banged home a centering pass at the side of the net from
Mark Menonte. Vaughan would cut the lead in half a few minutes later but
the Waxers would retsore the 2 goal lead before the end of the first
period. Pat Porretta made a terrific end to end rush, battling hard to
get around the Viper defense and then made a nice goal mouth pass to a wide
open Rainor Guminny for the Waxers 3rd goal of the period.
The second period saw the tide start to shift as the Waxers
took a number of ill advised and lazy penalties enabling the Vipers to tie the
score 3-3 on consecutive powerplays, the first a 5-on-3 advantage, mid way
through the period. The Waxers grabbed the lead again on a 5-on-3
powerplay of their own when Tony Rossi lulled the Vipers to sleep at the half
boards and then fired a cross ice pass to
Jamie Wright for the one-timer in to
the open side.
Vaughan tied the game 4-4 in he opening minutes of the third
and then took their first lead of the game 5-4 with a little less than half of
the third period remaining. With goaltender
Anthony Guadagnolo pulled for
an extra attacker, Porretta grabbed a loose puck rebound in the Vaughan crease
and stuffed it home for a 5-5 draw, sending the game in to overtime.
For the first time in 4 overtime games, the Waxers lost the
affair when the Vipers scored the winning goal off a 3-on-2 rush.
A solid first period followed by sloppy play in the second
and third period by the Waxers luckily resulted in them earning a single
point thanks to league rules enabling the two teams tied at the end of
regulation to earn at least one point from the affair regardless of the
overtime result.
