The Waxers extended their modest winning streak to 4 straight
games after a dominant 7-1 victory over the visiting Newmarket
Hurricanes. In their only visit to Markham, the Hurricanes fell behind
early and never recovered as the Waxers also held a decided advantage in shots,
39-29.
Off the opening faceoff, the puck was dumped in to the
Newmarket end and when Tony Rossi
tracked it down, he circled the net and
centered to Juaquin Chavira who deposited the puck for his first of 2 goals on
the night, 14 seconds in to the game. It took just over 7 minutes for the
Waxers to up the lead to 2-0 when Ryan Steane blasted home his first of 2 goals
on the night finishing off a nice 3-on-2 rush with Stephen Wong and
Kevin Cribari. The period ended with the two goal lead intact.
The Waxers struck first (and second) in the second period as
well to make the score 4-0 by just past the midpoint of the game. Just
over six minutes in to the middle frame, Aaron Buckstein head manned the puck
in the neutral zone to Mark Menonte and he made a terrific pass to a streaking
Liam Bowen on the 2-on-1 rush for Bowen's 11th goal of the year. Menonte
then his turn scoring later in the period while on a powerplay. Rossi
lead the charge from the Waxers end down the ice after picking up the puck from
Michael Pain. After deking his way over the blueline, Rossi fed the puck
to Menonte and his redirect went through the goalie's legs. Newmarket
would score their only goal almost 30 seconds later but the Waxers restored the
four goal lead with just over a minute left in the period. Chavira won a
battle for a loose puck in the Hurricanes end and cycled the puck to Menonte in
the corner. Stepping to the net, Menonte found Steane all alone in the
high slot and Steane's low wrister made it 5-1 heading in to the third period.
Early in the third, Menonte scored his second goal of the game
off a rebound from a faceoff deep in the Hurrcianes end. Bowen and Jeff
Weiss earned the other assists. Chavira completed the scoring when he
dunked home a rebound in the final minute after Ben Cottreau had sprung Steane
loose for a breakaway and a chance for a hat trick.
Anthony Guadagnolo continued to roll along between the pipes
stopping 28 shots for his 8th victory of the year.
