Markham exacted some revenge Sunday night, travelling to
Wexford for the second meeting of the year between the rivals, the first of
which was won handily by the Raiders. The Waxers won this game 7-3,
evening the season series at one win a piece behind Ben
Cottreau's first Junior
A hat trick and a 6 goal outburst in the third period.
After a flat first period where Wexford held a major advantage
in the play, the Waxers entered the second period trailing by a 2-0
score. They were able to get on the board midway through the second
period on the power play to make the score 2-1. Liam Bowen threaded the
needle with a pass through the box to Jamie Wright who was streaking to the net
from the far point. Wright's redirect of the pass sailed wide but he
retrieved the puck behind the net and centered it to Pat Porretta who one-timed
the puck past the Raider goalie for the goal at the 10:30 mark of the
period. At that point, the Waxers had begun to take over the game and the
Waxers seized the momentum from the goal and carried the play for the remainder
of the game.
The Waxers tied the game just 51 seconds in to the third period
on Cottreau's first of the evening. Just seconds after a Wexford penalty
had expired, goalie Anthony Guadagnolo played a soft dump in up to the far blue
line catching Wexford on a line change. Tony Rossi took the feed and lead
the 3-on-2 rush where he dropped it to Ryan Olidis and Olidis found Cottreau
all alone at the far post for the easy dunk in to the open net. The score
stayed tied at 2-2 for the next ten minutes, but with Markham dominating the
play. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Wexford took a 5 minute major checking
from behind penalty and the Waxers pounced on the opportunity scoring 4 times
over the next 5 minutes. Bowen started the onslaught, converting on
another pretty 3-on-2 rush when he one-timed home a Porretta feed with Kevin
Cribari earning the second assist. The Waxers game winning goal was
scored by Olidis who rifled home a shot from the slot after Rossi and Cottreau
had moved the puck well down low in the Raider zone. Cottreau then
finished off his hat trick scoring two goals in 16 seconds. The first was
a terrific deflection of a Wright shot from the point with Joe Rothwell earning
the other assist. The final goal when Wright and Rossi worked the
breakout perfectly and found Cottreau streaking down the far wall.
Cottreau blew past the defenseman and roofed a shot high blocker side to
complete the trick. Wexford would add a late goal to cut the lead to 6-3
and Cribari finished the evening with an empty net goal, assists to Albert
Ferrante and Aaron
Buckstein.
Guadagnolo stopped 34 saves for the victory which
places Markham in a tie for first place with the Raiders and the idle North
York Rangers.
