There was an intense, playoff-like game Sunday at the annual College Weekend
between the Markham Waxers and the victorious Georgetown Raiders.
Considered by many in attendance to the one of the top two or three games over
the weekend, the high powered Raiders were just a little bit better than the
hard working Waxers winning by a 7-4 score.
Georgetown stormed out to an early 3-0 lead before the Waxers got one back
before the first period came to a close. Liam
Bowen jumped on a loose puck off a faceoff deep in the Raiders end and his
shot blew past the screened goaltender before he knew what happened.
Georgetown scored twice early in the second to make it 5-1 when the game
turned around in the Waxers favour. Markham controlled the majority of
the second period and whittled their way to 5-3 on two goals by Pat
Porretta. It appeared the game was 5-4 when a Kevin
Cribari shot appeared to go in, but alas, the officials ruled that it had
gone off both posts and stayed out. Georgetown was abler to get one more
goal to make it 6-3 heading to the final frame.
Poretta scored early in the third to make it 6-4 and the comeback
continued. For Porretta, this was his first hat trick in a Waxer
uniform. All three goals were assisted on by Cribari, two by Nathaniel
Brooks (the first and third) and the other (the second) had Stephen
Wong earning the second assist. The Waxers poured it on but some
solid goaltending in the Raiders net kept the score the way it was until
Georgetown added their final goal late in the period to seal the win.
A real "knock-down-drag-'em-out" effort by both teams today which
made for an enjoyable game to watch. It was the type of game that even
the spectators went home tired and with and couple of bruises just from
watching the two teams battle so hard. The Waxers hope to carry that
intensity with them for the remainder of the year.
