WAXERS AS MARKHAM LEAVES THE PRE-SEASON WITH A 2-2 RECORD
The Waxers completed their preseason with their second
consecutive lopsided defeat, this time at the hands of the Newmarket
Hurricanes 8-3 on a warm Sunday night in Markham. A decent crowd
for an exhibition game, most must have stopped in for the game after
leaving nearby Angus Glen Golf Course, the site of the Bell Canadian
Open.
Newmarket scored the only two goals of the first period, both power
play markers, less than one minute a part just 5 minutes in to the
game. That scored held until 3 minutes in to the second period
when they upped the score to 3-0.
Liam Bowen scored the Waxers first goal 15 seconds later
when he stuffed home a rebound of a Ben Cottreau breakaway
attempt for his second goal of the preseason. Newmarket would score
twice more to take a 5-1 lead in to the third period.
Just 52 seconds in to the third period, Markham struck back
when Stephen Wong ripped home a wrist shot from the high slot
for a 5-2 score assisted by Joe Rothwell. Newmarket would score
the next 3 goals before Mark Menonte would end the scoring in
the final seconds, assisted by Tony Rossi and Ryan Steane.
Not the finish the Waxers were looking for and they now turn their
attention to the regular season, opening up Friday, September 13 at
8:00 pm in Markham against the St Michael's Buzzers.
