The Waxers opened the South-East Conference Finals on the road,
and for the first time this post-season lost game 1 of a series. The
Waxers failed miserably in their first trip to the fabled "Dukedome"
as the defending South-East Champs showed the Waxers the intensity and work
ethic necessary to continue on this deep in the playoffs. One of the few
bright lights for the Waxers was the play of goaltender Anthony
Guadagnolo,
making his second start of the playoffs. Stopping 31 shots during the
game, Guadagnolo stood tall in net, flashing his glove hand on a number of
occasions and kicking out his pads on others to keep the Waxers close.
Wellington opened the scoring with 6:28 left in the first
period to take a 1-0 lead in to the first intermission. The Dukes
controlled the majority of the period, out shooting the Waxers
14-10.
Markham tied the game, briefly, to open the period on a Pat
Porretta goal just 1:04 in to the middle frame. Breaking out of the Waxer
end, Jamie Wright sent the
puck to Tony Rossi, who battled off a check and tipped the puck over to the boards for
Porretta. Heading up the ice, Porretta crossed the blueline, delayed
slightly and then ripped a wrist shot through the goalie's legs for the lone
Waxer goal of the evening. Wellington answered backe with two goals, one
just 1:35 later and the second near the midway point of the game to take the
3-1 lead. Shots were 14-12 for Wellington in the second.
The third period was probably the most evenly matched as the
play went back and forth, with both teams generating chances and with the
goalies making good saves (occasionally with the help of the posts and
crossbars) at both ends. Wellington would salt away the victory scoring twice
in to the empty net in the final minute to make the score 5-1. Shots in
the third period favoured the Waxers, 10-8.
