Another exciting game was played in game 5 and like the first
four, the home team prevailed as the Wexford Raiders outlasted the Waxers
4-3. This puts the Waxers on the brink of elimination with game 6 being
played Monday night back in Markham. The game was fast paced until the
second intermission in which the Zamboni took almost 30 minutes to start and
the two teams remained in their dressing rooms for almost 45 minutes in
total. After the long break, the Waxers played their best period of the
night but had dug a hole too deep to get out of after 40 minutes of haphazard
hockey.
Wexford opened the scoring less than four minutes in to the
game on a wrap around goal after a turnover in the Markham end. The
Waxers would tie the game before the period was half over on a power
play. Attacking the Raider zone off a quick transition play in the
neutral zone, Tony Rossi poked the puck past the Wexford defenceman to
Mark
Menonte at the blueline. Menonte started in to the zone and then fed a
perfect goal mouth pass to Liam Bowen who had a step on the backchecker and he
deposited the goal for the 1-1 tie. Wexford scored a late 4-on-4 goal to
take a 2-1 lead in to the second period.
The period was scoreless for the opening 15 minutes before
Wexford bagged their 3rd goal of the game to get a two goal lead. They
would up the lead to 4-1 when they scored with 1:07 left in the period.
Markham was able to get the momentum back on their side when Menonte scored to
make it 4-2 with 0:24 left in the period. Stephen Wong started the
breakout and passed the puck across the ice to Rossi. He waited for
Menonte to get open and fed the puck ahead. Menonte then danced in and
while making a deke on the Raider defence, fired a hard wrist shot back against
the grain for the goal.
Markham dominated the third period, holding a 17-3 shot
advantage but was only able to score once. Just 4:20 in to the period,
Andrew Dias got to a loose puck in the Raider end and fed Ben Cottreau in the
high slot. Cottreau walked in all alone and after freezing the goalie
with an apparent deke to his backhand, slid the puck to Ryan Olidis streaking
to the net for the easy slam dunk. That was as close as the Waxers would
get and they now must find a way to win on home ice and force a game seven.
