In a game in which the score flattered the Waxers, the Wexford
Raiders evened the South Division Championship Series at 1-1 with a 5-3 defeat
of Markham on Sunday night. The Waxers came out flat and the Raiders were
simply the better team the majority of the night. A late flurry by the
Waxers cut the deficit from 5-1 to 5-3 however, there were two Raiders goals
not counted in the third period (for some unknown reason) that would have been a
much better indicator of the way the game was contested.
Wexford scored the only goal of the opening period,
capitalizing on an early 5-on-3 power play less than five minutes in to the
game.
The Raiders upped it to 2-0 less than 3 minutes in to the
second before the Waxers would get on the board at the 4:02 mark. Liam
Bowen chased down a loose puck in the Wexford end and cycled it down low to
Kevin Cribari by the side of the net. Cribari stepped out and after his
first shot was stopped, banged home the rebound to make it close for a little
while. Wexford blew the game open with two more in the second and one
early in the third to make it 5-1 with 15:50 left in regulation.
Things suddenly took a turn for the better when the Waxers
bagged two goals in just 15 seconds midway through the period. First,
Mark Menonte intercepted an outlet pass in the Raider end and danced in all
alone deking the Raider goalie and roofing the puck for the Waxers 2nd
goal. Then, off the draw at center, Markham took control and started in
to the Raider end. Mike Diamond had the puck and dumped in the Wexford
end and went all the way around to Mike Standon on the far boards.
Standon fired the puck in front where Tony Rossi tipped the puck past the
goalie to make it 5-3. That gave the Waxers some life and they played
well for the remainder of the game. It was, however, too little too late
and the Waxers fell short.
Time to regroup for the boys in blue before returning to
Wexford on Tuesday night for game 3.
