Markham has taken a 2-0 lead over Thornhill in their first
round match up, winning on home ice by a 6-1 count buoyed by a 4 goal outburst
in the second period. Markham got goals from 5 different players tonight
and the Waxers out shot the Rattlers by a 42-26 count on the evening.
Thornhill opened the scoring on a power play just 2:24 in to
the game but that would be the final lead for the Rattlers on this
evening. After a tentative opening 10 minutes, Markham took control of
the game and dominated the rest of the way. Markham tied the game with
2:29 left in the period thanks to a fortuitous bounce. Jumping on a loose
puck in the neutral zone, Nathaniel Brooks passed the puck up to
Daniel Torres
and jumped in the rush to make it a 2-on-1. Torres' attempted pass to
Brooks hit the Rattler defenseman's skate and bounced up in to the net for the
tie game and Torres' first Junior A playoff goal. Then, in the final
minute of the period, the Waxers took the lead for good. Working off a
face-off in the Markham end, Liam Bowen and
Ryan Steane combined to spring
Kevin Cribari on a rush up the ice. Cribari took the puck to the net and
took the shot, Bowen raced up and got the rebound, fed it back to Cribari who
slid the puck across the crease to a wide open Steane at the back door and he
slammed it home for his second in as many games.
Markham used their power play to their advantage in the middle
frame, scoring three of their four goals with the extra man advantage. It
started just under 5 minutes in to the period when the Waxers made it 3-1 on
Bowen's first of the night. All five players touched the puck as the
Waxers moved it around the Rattler zone at will before Joe Rothwell fed
Mark
Menonte in the corner. Menonte swooped around the net and fed Bowen in
the slot for a one-timer that went between the goalie's legs. Then, just
over a minute later, the Waxers would strike at even strength. After Pat
Porretta fed it back to the point, Albert Ferrante kept the puck in at the
blueline and threw it down in to the corner to a waiting Menonte. He
threw it out in front to Tony Rossi who fought off his check and roofed a shot
for a 4-1 lead. Midway through the period, the Waxers made it 5-1 on
Bowen's second when Rothwell dove to keep the puck alive at the blueline,
Menonte got and cycled it low to Rossi who fed Bowen out front in the slot for
the goal. Markham completed the outburst, with 6:32 left in the period,
when Menonte picked up a goal after a rebound bounced in of his head as the
Waxers crashed the net after a Rossi shot. Cribari picked up the second
assist on the goal.
The third period was pure efficiency by the Waxers who kept the
Rattlers at bay and still generated a few chances of their own. Scott
Gray played net picking up his second straight victory stopping 25 shots on the
evening.
