Thursday night the Waxers traveled to Stouffville
to take on the Spirit and departed with a disappointing 7-4 loss. The Waxers
played their best hockey of the year in the first period and didn't suffer much
in the way of letdowns the rest of the way but came away with no points despite
the outstanding effort.
The first period was all Markham, the forwards
were forechecking tenaciously and creating scoring chances, many of the chances
resulting from the Waxers finishing their checks. Eight minutes into the
game Jesse Boucher
scored off a rebound of a Mark
Menonte shot who had been setup nicely by Steve
Nobili. Less than three minutes later the Waxer powerplay struck, Derek
Doucette kept the puck in the offensive zone and fed Andy
Schofield who found Kevin
Tompkins all alone and Tompkins drove right to the net and wristed one
in from the slot to make it 2-0.
Late in the second period Tompkins and Kevin
Cribari raced into Stouffville territory on a 2-on-1, Tompkins driving
down the right wing fed Cribari with a beautiful pass and Cribari made no
mistake wristing one high to the glove side to push the Waxers up 3-1. The
Spirit scored twice late in the period, the third goal coming with just eleven
seconds remaining.
The Spirit jumped out to a 5-3 advantage before Paul
Robinson made a great rush from his own blueline, fending off two
Spirit attackers to spring free, he crossed the Stouffville line and unloaded a
low slapshot and Robert
Burrows dunked home the rebound to cut the margin to 5-4. The Waxers
continued to press and mounted several excellent scoring charges, only to end
up shooting wide of the target or being turned away by the Spirit netminder.
The Spirit iced the win with a pair of goals late in the contest, the latter
into an empty Markham cage.
The Waxers don't get any time to regroup
however, Friday night they host the pesky North York Rangers before traveling
Saturday to Thornhill to face the rival cross-town Rattlers.
