The Waxers made their first trip of
the year to Pickering to face the Panthers, they had split two earlier contests
in Markham. Playing their second of three weekend contests and with a lineup
full of holes due to injuries the Waxers persevered and brought home a well
deserved 4-2 victory.
The Panthers struck early,
capitalizing on a turnover while killing off a penalty. After a few minutes had
elapsed the pace of the contest slowed noticeably, perhaps due to the fact that
both clubs had played the night before (Pickering tied St. Michael's 3-3 while
the Waxers downed the Rattlers 5-2).
In the second period the
Panthers came out of the gate with more spark than Markham but after Paul
Guthrie turned away a big scoring chance four minutes into the middle
period the momentum shifted to the Waxers. With six minutes remaining in the
period Kevin Cribari
flipped home a rebound from the edge of the crease after the Panther netminder
had made a good stop on a play developed by Kevin
Tompkins and Paul
Robinson. The Panthers capitalized on their only other good scoring
chance of the period and took the lead back with about four minutes left in the
frame. With the second period beginning to wind down, less than three minutes
on the clock, Tompkins and Robinson combined for some excellent work down low,
keeping the puck alive as they fended off the Panther defense, finally Robinson
popped out to take a shot, the goalie made the save and the rebound fell to the
exact spot where Cribari had scored his first of the night, he made no mistake
the second time around either. That tied the score at 2-2.
It took the excellent netminding
of the Panther keeper to keep Pickering tied in the first half of the final
period but the Waxers kept pouring it on. Guthrie made two big saves in the
period to give his club the chance to win. By now the earlier slow pace was a
distant memory and the contest was turning into a very physical affair. Finally
with less than four minutes remaining the Waxers struck paydirt and took the
lead for the first time of the night. Brent
Pollock raced smartly to cut off a clearing pass along the right
boards, then raced in a few steps and fed Bobby
Fitkin with a glorious pass and Fitkin swept the puck past the Panther
keeper into the cage for the 3-2 lead. In the final minute of play Pollock made
a blueline to blueline pass, cross ice, to James
Regan on the left wing, the pass getting through the maze of players in
the middle was one thing but then Regan made it count when he completed a deke
of the netminder to ice the win for the Waxers.
Markham next takes on the Tigers
in Aurora on Sunday night to conclude their weekend schedule.
