The Waxers trekked into North York
on Saturday to end their gruelling stretch of 7 games in 9 nights and came out
with a well deserved 5-3 win over the pesky, hard working Rangers. The victory
stopped a two-game winless streak and ensured the Waxers would finish with a
winning record over the week long marathon.
The Waxers came out of the gates
flying and ended the first twenty minutes with a 3-0 lead. Mark
Menonte scored the first goal of the game just over 13 minutes into the
contest when he buried home the puck after he and linemates Kevin
Tompkins and Ryan Taylor
had moved it around the North York end at will. Just over a minute later,
Tompkins scooped up the puck behind the Ranger net, circled out from the
half-wall and rifled a quick wrist shot past the goalie for a 2-0 lead. Then,
with just two minutes left in the period, James
Regan made a nice drop pass to Bobby Fitkin
on the rush and he found Jason
Duffy with a pretty goal mouth pass for the easy redirect goal and the
3-0 lead.
Fatigue seemed to overcome the
Waxers in the second period and the Rangers were allowed to storm back and tie
the game at 3-3 and outshoot the Waxers 19-6 in the middle frame.
Markham, as has become the
trend, saved their best for last and found their second wind going into the
third period. The Waxers dominated the play swarming the Ranger net only to be
thwarted time and time again. Just over five minutes into the period, Duffy
made an outlet pass to Fitkin who carried the puck deep into the Ranger zone
before find Brent Pollock
alone as the trailer. Pollock made no mistake, sniping the game winning goal
with a hard wrist shot, low stick side. The domination continued through out
the remainder of the period and the Ranger goalie made a number of good stops
to keep the game close. The Rangers however could muster no serious attacks
against the Waxers and Paul
Guthrie stopped all seven shots in the period. Jesse
Boucher sealed the victory with an empty net goal with only five
seconds left on the clock.
The Waxers now welcome the
chance to rest and get in a full week of practice before the next game on
Friday against the same North York Rangers.
