The Waxers extended an early season winning streak
to three with an exciting 4-3 overtime win against Wellington in the College
Weekend game played at the Hershey Centre.
The Waxers and the Dukes played an intense, and
fast paced game in what some observers stated was the best game of the weekend
to that point. Markham got on the board first when Bobby Fitkin scored his first goal as a Waxer on the powerplay in the first
period. Jason Duffy
and Jesse Boucher
collected assists. Then, while even strength, Mark Mitchell sprung Duffy on a
2-on-1 with Boucher who drove home a nice goal mouth pass from Duffy in to the
open cage for a 2-0 lead.
The Waxers continued their assault through much
of the second period but could not buy a goal as they hit the post 3 times in
the middle frame. The Dukes would score the only goal of the period and the
lead was 2-1 going in to the third.
Wellington scored to tie the game 2-2 in the
early part of the third and that is when the game really got exciting, or at
least more exciting than it had already been. Jason
Young scored to give the Waxers a 3-2 lead with seven minutes to play
with Kevin Tompkins
and Mark Menonte
earning assists. Then with just over 2 minutes remaining, the hard working
Dukes again tied the game and the two teams went to overtime.
Just over 1 minute in to overtime, a clearing
pass from the Waxers eluded a Wellington defender and found Paul
Robinson at the far blue line. Robinson made a quick outside-in
move and broke free of the final defender blazing in and ripping a hard wrist
shot past the glove hand of the Dukes goalie to finish the game, 1:20 in to the
fourth period.
The goaltending duties were split between Paul
Guthrie and Dan Leclair
tonight. The Waxers next game is Monday night in their only home meeting
with the Aurora Tigers.
